Nigeria’s President-elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu was sworn into office as the country’s 16th president on Monday May 29, 2023. The 71-year-old Tinubu who was a former governor of Lagos State, took over from Muhammadu Buhari following elections in February. His election is still being contested in court by opposition parties and among many Nigerians who accused him of stealing their mandate. Nigeria is one of Africa’s top oil producers but has suffered from poor governance and systemic corruption.
