Canada Denies President Goodluck Jonathan a State Visit Due to Anti Gay Law.

Canadian government has cancelled a scheduled visit of president Goodluck Ebele Jonathan to their country in February indefinitly. The reason according to some news agencies is “Same Sex Marriage Prohibition Bill” which was recently signed by Jonathan. The law carries a 14 year jail term for gays, lesbians and sexual minorities in Nigeria.
The meeting scheduled for February 13th and 14th which was aimed at strengthening diplomatic relations between Canada and Nigeria has been cancelled over the anti-gay law. Some sources in Abuja told Saharareporters that the Nigerian Ambassador to Canada, Ojo Madueke, was told to inform President Goodluck Jonathan not to bother coming as scheduled until further notice.
The cancellation came after media reports that Jonathan had signed the Same Sex Marriage Prohibition Bill.

On hearing the news of the bill, Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister, John Baird, issued a statement for the Canadian government saying:

“Canada has clearly spoken out against human rights violations committed against people on the basis of their sexuality, and we will continue to do so.
“Canada is deeply concerned that Nigeria has adopted a law that further criminalizes homosexuality. This law can be used to impose prison sentences of up to 14 years.
“We call on Nigeria to repeal this law and to promote and protect the human rights and fundamental freedoms of all Nigerians regardless of their sexual orientation.
“Canada has clearly spoken out against human rights violations committed against people on the basis of their sexuality, and we will continue to do so.”
