Seven-month-old Chinese baby Xiao Wei was born with abnormally formed vertebrae, a type of spina bifida called myelomeningocele in which the spinal column is not fully closed. In Xiao’s case, the spinal cord protrudes, forming a sac that contains the spinal matter. The condition requires a complicated operation to the spinal canal to correct it.

The picture shows mother Chen Wei holding her son Xiao. She’s urging doctors to help her son, who was born with a three-inch-long ‘tail’ that is still growing. The boys mother said that surgeons told her her that they cannot just remove the growth. According to news agencies, surgeon Huang Chanping said: “The growth is quite well developed and now measures some 10 centimeters. “If we cut it off, it will simply grow again. We need to repair the spinal canal first to stop it from reoccurring.” I wish mum and baby goodluck.
