Cardinals Kept in total Isolation Until they Choose a New Pope.

Vatican conclave begins today as 115 cardinals from around the world gather in the Vatican [ Sistine Chapel]. to elect the next pope. They are kept in total isolation according to the church rule until they come up with a new pope. They swore oaths of secrecy with their hands on a Bible, pledging in Latin to never reveal details of what transpired during the selection or they will be excommunicated.   The 115 cardinals will not have contact with the outside world, until they have chosen a successor to the former – Pope Benedict XVI who resigned on Feb. 28, 2013. Vatican officials have also installed jamming devices to prevent the use of cellphones by cardinals or hidden microphones by anyone interested to hear their deliberations.

Once the voting finally begins,  there will be one ballot, followed by two every morning and two every afternoon until someone gets two-thirds of the votes. Based on history, no conclave has lasted more than five days in the past century, with most finishing within two or three days. Pope Benedict the XVI was the first pontif to resign in nearly 600 years.
